How does the process of teeth whitening work?
Over time, our teeth may lose their whiteness and develop yellowish or brownish discoloration. This change can be attributed to natural tooth aging, tooth decay, or the consumption of coffee or tobacco. If you notice that your teeth have become discolored, you can consider a teeth-whitening treatment.
This treatment aims to restore the whiteness of your smile by reducing the presence of stains on your teeth. The dentist may recommend one of two solutions:
- Chairside whitening treatment involving the application of a whitening solution.
- Wearing a protective mouthguard containing a whitening agent for a predetermined time, either during the day or at night.
It's important to note that the results of the treatment are not instantaneous, as it may take a few hours in the case of the solution or a few days for the protective mouthguard.
If your teeth are stained due to factors like food or tobacco, or if they have become yellowish due to natural tooth aging, the dentist may suggest vital whitening. On the other hand, if your teeth have darkened because they are devitalized, non-vital whitening may be recommended. The latter involves whitening your teeth from the inside out.
I am interested in teeth whitening. Can I learn more about how the treatment is conducted?
1. Examination of Your Teeth: Before proceeding with the teeth whitening treatment, the dentist will complete a full examination of your dentition. They will verify the condition of your gums, the surrounding bones, occlusion, and the joints.
2. Analysis of Your Smile: Then, they will analyze the overall dental appearance of your smile to determine the most ideal treatment. If they deem a teeth whitening treatment necessary, they can either proceed immediately or offer you another appointment for the procedure.
3. Whitening: During the intervention, the dentist can apply a whitening solution to your teeth. Alternatively, if they choose a protective mouthguard, they will first take impressions of your teeth to create the ideal mouthguard for you. Note that each intervention can be conducted under sedation.
